It’s New World Year 1252. Humanity has fled a dying Earth and built a new civilization on the distant planet of Awthfruztas. Orderly, surveilled, and scrubbed clean of anything that doesn’t fit. Queerness has been erased from record.

Or so the Governing Council believes. Hidden in the cave systems along the shore of an island, a secret archive pulses with the drag history, chosen names, and hard-won identities of Old Earth. And tonight, for the first time in over twelve hundred years, a drag queen is going to step into the spotlight.

Written and performed by Aaron Nickol, Space Queen is a one-person sci-fi musical that builds an entire world through storytelling and an electrifying original score.

Funny, fierce, and genuinely moving, Space Queen tackles visibility, chosen family, and the radical act of resistance… all wrapped in a story that feels both urgently futuristic and achingly familiar.

“A passion project by the queers and for the queers.”

“A transfixing, and harmonic, melancholy journey to the future.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the beginning stages of this show! I really resonated with the experiences of queer people and artists being shown through a futuristic dystopian world that reflects our past and current struggles for space, visibility and peace. As a drag performer I was touched to the point of tears with the writing and songs in this piece. Space Queen was the highlight of my Fringe experience!!”

About the Artist

Shelita Cox is a powerhouse of the Victoria, BC drag scene and the creative backbone to Drag Sunday Productions. With over eight years of experience producing high-impact, high-glamour shows, she has become a pillar of the local queer arts community: uplifting fellow performers, mentoring emerging talent, creating spaces that push the definition of drag as entertainment, and is celebrated as a vehicle for community-building and cultural celebration.

A proud Indigenous performer with roots in the Kwak’wala-speaking peoples of the ‘Namgis First Nation, Shelita brings her whole self to the stage. She is an active seamstress, costume designer, and visual storyteller: crafting every look she wears by hand. Her dedication to self-made drag showcases her skills as a performer and creator.

Shelita’s creativity extends far beyond the lip sync. She is also a writer and showrunner, having scripted and starred in original theatrical productions like Drag Through Time, a drag cabaret play blending humor, history, and high camp. She has performed as an opener and emcee for over a dozen RuPaul’s Drag Race queens, holding her own with wit, warmth, and undeniable stage presence.
