All-nighters.

Nudity.

Nitrous.

Just another day in the life of a doula.

Doulas provide physical, emotional, and informational support to people giving birth. This support is non-clinical – think hand-holding, “you got this”, and reassuring a partner that yes, those wild guttural moans and curse words you’ve never heard before mean she’s doing great!

Local birth nerd Pamela, who makes her living in the front row of childbirth, delivers a look into this secret, strange, and sleep-deprived netherworld—and how she got there.

A show for anyone who’s ever been born.

About the Artist

Pamela Bethel has worked on and created various theatrical projects.

“After the Beep”, a show about her teenage answering machine, played at Uno Fest and then Fringe Festivals in Victoria, Nanaimo, Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Toronto where it was held over for Best of Fringe. “After the Beep” was given a coveted 5 star review from Now Magazine and was called “a deeply original play”.

Pamela wrote and directed “Cornelius and Titania Or, a Tragedy of the Commons (a comedy)”, which delighted Victoria Fringe audiences in 2018. One critic called it “wry, intelligent and ironic”. Another critic may have seen it, but no evidence can be found today.

You can read about more of Pamela’s artistic work on her website, if she gets around to updating it by deadline.

She’s also a birth nerd, an umbrella term that encompasses her work as a birth doula, postpartum doula, lactation helper, and childbirth educator. She is co-owner of Constellations Prenatal, where she has taught hundreds of people about how to prepare for labour, birth, and beyond.

Before that, she was a commercial photographer. Before that, she was a stage manager for theatre and opera companies all over the country.
