Expiry Date is the staged reading and workshop of a brand new piece of trans theatre written by local playwright Jasper Mallette. Come join us for a reading and talkback, and help to develop this important piece of art that celebrates transness!

Expiry Date is a full-length, one-act play about two transmasc people living in an apocalypse, debating on whether or not hormones are essential to their survival. If they are, what happens when they run out and/or expire?

It explores themes of trans resilience and how trans people manage to survive even in the most unlikely circumstances. It poses questions such as; would hormones still be essential to survival if there was no society to enforce gender roles?; how does queer community form?; how can transness vary so widely?; and in what ways do trans experiences exist beyond the gender binary?

Set in an alternate 2020s; what if something like covid had essentially killed off or zombified the majority of the population? It takes place in the rural town Enderby, BC. Beneath, around, and throughout it all, it considers what community and companionship truly means.

About the artists:

Pithy Productions is a collective of emerging theatre artists with a dedication to the development of new and exciting scripts or proposals, especially those by, for, or about the trans community. Their recent play Joany by Molly Jamin won the award for Outstanding Production at this year’s Between Words Victoria One Act Play Festival, and they’re super excited to continue their second ever season of productions with Jasper Mallette’s Expiry Date.

Jay Zero Ehala Fodor (any pronouns) is a new face in the theatre scene here on lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ lands. They grew up loving theatre and are thrilled to be reigniting this passion in Expiry Date. He loves consuming and creating art that is niche, queer, unsettling and cringe. When not on stage, Zero can be found being their own hair dresser, befriending odd animals, or growing and cooking food for her partners and friends. Zero encourages you to sit back, buckle up, and enjoy the roller coaster of emotions coming your way.

Margi Stoner is overjoyed to be welcomed back for their second production with Pithy Productions as the stage manager for Expiry Date. Currently a fourth year theatre student at the University of Victoria, they are grateful for the opportunities to be working with local theatre companies and expanding their educational toolkit. Previous credits include Twelfth Night (DSM, Phoenix Theatre), Pony and Bologna (SM, Pithy Productions), and Project Hollywood (SM, SATCo). Margi would like to thank you for coming, hopes you enjoy the show, and are romanced by some crackers and beans!

Rozzy Hatch (she/her) is a fashionista, musician and aspiring filmmaker, residing in Comox BC. Having acted in several plays and films in the past, she is now trying her hand at costume design and makeup. As a queer person herself, with a love for dystopian films, Expiry Date was the perfect project to combine her love for fashion with a genre and subject close to her heart.

Mo Hatch (they/them) is a director, playwright, creator, and occasional over-thinker, living and working on unceded Lekwungen land. Having recently graduated from the University of Victoria with a BFA in Theatre and Writing, their directing credits include Weightless (UVic SATCo Spring 2023), Phantom Pains (Fringe Festival 2023), The Lord Sees All (UVic SATCo Fall 2023), and The Goode TV Hour (UVic SATCo Spring 2024). Directing a queer dystopian show only felt right, considering they are also queer and questioning the future, and Mo hopes Expiry Date brings everyone closer to the love that can be found through the loss of a changing world.

Jerry Lesperance graduated from the University of Victoria in June 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts in General Humanities, focusing on Professional Communications and Theatre. She gained production credits with the Phoenix Theatre as an assistant stage manager in Love and Information (2021) and as a dresser in The Children’s Hour (2020). Expiry Date is Jerry’s first design credit, and she is excited to share her creative vision with audiences. Jerry would like to thank Mo for asking her to be on the project, her partner Cristobal and their cat Pepper for offering endless support.

Jasper Mallette (he/they) is a transmasculine playwright and theatre maker who currently resides and creates within the traditional territories of the WSÁNEĆ, Lekwungen, and Songhees colonially known as Victoria, BC. They recently got their BFA in Writing from the University of Victoria. His previous playwriting credits include Straw produced by UVic’s SATCo in 2022, and Tadpole produced by We’re All Friends Theatre Company in 2023 for Between Word’s Victoria One Act Play Festival. He is currently in the process of developing his play Expiry Date with Pithy Productions. He often writes work revolving around queerness with a particular focus on transmasculine identity, an affinity for comedy, horror, and romance, and has recently been inspired to indulge in so-called “Canadian” queer history with the hope of educating and entertaining the masses. They also believe that silliness is vastly underrated.

Miriam Dumitra is a polymath whose skills range from writing to sound design to blacksmithing. Their summers are spent as a historic interpreter in Barkerville, B.C., while they contract as a theatre technician and designer the rest of the year. In their spare time, you can find them writing queer stories, researching their topic du jour, and playing a socially anxious paladin with their Dungeons and Dragons group.

Nichelle Friesen is an emerging artist working on unceded Lekwungen territory, specializing in building props and costumes. This is their first time set designing a show, and when not in rehearsal, Nichelle can be found taking care of their plants, chilling at the beach, or watching local drag. Past credits include A Stranger Remains (Co-director, SATCo), A Presence of all Hidden Things (Costume Design, SATCo), and On Guard (Director, SATCo).

J Johnson (he/they) is a theatre artist living and creating on the unceded lands of the Lekwungen peoples, where he primarily splits his time between being a playwright, actor, and dramaturg. He holds a BFA in Writing and Theatre from the University of Victoria, where he spent three years as a drama editor for undergrad literary journal This Side of West. Recent credits include Joany (Dramaturg, Pithy Productions, Victoria One Act Play Festival, 2025), FREE to a Good Home (Actor, Pithy Productions, Victoria One Act Play Festival, 2024), and The Goode T.V. Hour (Playwright, UVic SATCo 2024)

Rain Aiden Fox (He/They) is a young artist who is looking to tell stories. As a young child he loved performing in one way or another and it started as a lukewarm interest in music and dancing, which has blossomed into a love for choreography, musical theatre, writing, and acting. They graduated from Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA) earning a 2-year diploma, and worked with various companies and productions, such as Story Theatre Company, Gemini Productions, etc, where he learned to open up more, and how to better explore the stories they want to tell.

M. Gordon (any/all) is a genderqueer theatre artist and writer who recently produced Joany by M. Gordon (Victoria One Act, 2025), FREE to a Good Home by M. Gordon (Victoria One Act, 2024), Cringe by Connor Runnings (Pithy Productions, 2024), and Pony and Bologna by M. Gordon (Victoria Fringe Spotlight, 2024). They love all things weird or just left of normal, and are thrilled to be working on such a powerful piece of trans theatre.
