Frequently Asked Questions

A hold is an expression of interest in a specific date range for your event. You may place up to one hold per event. There is no obligation to confirm and no fee is charged for placing holds. Holds are tentative until you have confirmed your booking with a deposit and signed rental agreement. Holds are valid until six months before the date on hold for multi-day rentals, and three months for single-day rentals. If the hold has not been confirmed with a deposit by that date, the hold will then expire and may be released for others to book.

Deposit is required to confirm your hold. The deposit is 50% of the rental fee and is non-refundable. The deposit must be paid before tickets go on sale and before the event is promoted publicly in any way (including social media, posters/flyers, email, etc.) Deposits are due six months before the date of your hold for multi-day rentals and 3 months for single-day rentals. If you are placing a hold at shorter notice, you will need to pay the deposit right away to guarantee your date.

Yes, all rental fees are subject to 5% Goods & Services Tax (GST).

FESTIVAL HUB

No Front of House or Technical staffing is required at the Intrepid Hub, although the rental contact is responsible for ensuring the front door is actively monitored at any time it is unlocked.

STUDIO

For performances/screenings the Intrepid Studio, you must provide a minimum of two Front of House staff or volunteers (one usher in the house and one FOH member to remain in the lobby for the duration of the event). Intrepid may provide a Venue Representative, whose time will be charged back to the renter after the conclusion of their event, to clients who do not wish to monitor the lobby themselves during show times.

UNTIL APRIL 30 2026: For technical work, your team may be volunteers but must be sufficiently skilled to perform any work safely.  If you have any questions, please reach out to our Production Manager.

FROM MAY 1 2026: Intrepid requires that all events with technical/production requirements are staffed by an Intrepid Venue Technician. Events with no production requirements (i.e. those that operate under work lights/without needing to access the tech booth) do not need to be staffed by a Venue Technician. Rental clients may not supply their own technical equipment in order to run a show, shoot or screening themselves – an Intrepid Venue Technician is required.

We have recently closed our 172 Theatre – the Metro Studio – the silver lining of this chapter-end is that the Intrepid Studio Theatre is getting some much deserved tech upgrades as we combine our inventory and put it to good use. As the main home of Intrepid’s programming, we are looking forward to giving our lovely black box some TLC, and to help our renters elevate the production quality of their events!
As a result of these upgrades – particularly the fact that the booth will be equipped with more advanced production equipment – we are introducing a mandated Venue Technician for all Studio bookings with production needs from May 1 onwards. As a unionised theatre, Intrepid will provide an IATSE technician for your event, whose labour is charged back to the renter following the event. Their minimum call is 4 hours per day. A technician is not required for bookings that have no technical/production requirements.
Not necessarily – the technician is only required when you are needing to use the space for technical/production purposes. If you want to rig something or build a set in the space, have a tech rehearsal, hold a public performance with sound/lighting requirements, use audio playback or mixing, or screen something on the projector, you must have a technician present.
If you are rehearsing under work lights, or setting up props/costumes/basic set pieces with no build component, there is no requirement for a Venue Technician to be present. If you are having a public reading or workshop under work lights that has no technical/production requirements, a technician is not needed.
No – the majority of rental shows/events will be run by Intrepid’s Assistant Technical Director. If they are unavailable or more than one technician is required, Intrepid will place a call for technicians, who are dispatched to us by IATSE. Intrepid may not express preference for who is dispatched.
Technician calls/production schedules are created by Intrepid Theatre following a (typically phone) meeting between the rental client and Intrepid’s Production Manager. This is to make sure we have all of your event’s technical needs covered in a way that adheres to union requirements, is cost-effective and works with your intended schedule for the event day. Outside of the official production schedule produced for you by Intrepid, which concerns the Venue Technician’s time, you are welcome to structure your day how you see fit.

A certificate of General Liability Insurance with a limit of not less than $2 million of coverage, or $5 million at events where liquor is sold, is mandatory and must be provided a minimum of 14 days prior to the event.  The certificate must show Intrepid Theatre Company Society as a named insured.

Any event that serves alcohol must also have Liquor Liability Insurance, which can usually be added to your General Liability coverage through your provider.

We have partnered with Instant Risk Coverage to create an insurance portal especially for Intrepid Theatre renters, making sure you have the right level for your event – get your quote here.

No, the Intrepid Studio does not have fully private green room space at this time. A temporary cubicle with an electric sit/stand desk, a fridge and secure lockers is set behind the box office, which can be used for storage of belongings.

NEW: The Studio-Hub Combo Rental

Some clients choose to rent the Intrepid Festival Hub at the same time as the Studio for events requiring more artist/crew space for a subsidized flat fee. The Festival Hub connects directly into the Intrepid Studio Theatre via a corridor that is not shared with the general public, and features its own entrance, accessible washroom and kitchenette facilities. The Studio-Hub Combo is available on weekday evenings and weekends.

We’re not able to offer these services at this time. You are responsible for marketing and ticketing your event. You can choose any ticketing service or provider. We can provide advice, and at our discretion may share your event on our website or include it in our newsletter.

We are foremost a festival presenter and multi-day rentals remain our priority.
