Next Phase Campaign

This fall, we are converting the traditional theatre seating at The Metro Studio into tiered cabaret seating. This new set-up will accommodate 40 patrons spaced out at tables, and will allow us to welcome audiences back safely for in-person shows during COVID-19. Over the next year, we are also making important upgrades to theatrical structures at both The Metro Studio and Intrepid Studio. These much needed upgrades cost $415,000 and thanks to successful Capital Grants, we have raised most of the funds for this project but need your help for the final push!

The creation of these downtown theatres has had a huge impact on the local arts scene and thrill-seeking audiences, fostering new work from local companies, and hosting touring shows from Ronnie Burkett Theatre’s of Marionettes to L’Orchestre D’Hommes Orchestres, to Hawskley Workman.

Donate today and help in the final push as we start work at both our theatre spaces that serve as a hub for creativity and experimentation for the local arts community, and are the home for our festivals, shows, residencies and events at Intrepid Theatre.

Scrappy beginnings of The Metro Studio

“The idea to create what became the Metro Studio followed the closure of several downtown theatres in the late 90s and early 2000s, including Kaleidoscope Playhouse, which was renamed the Herald Street Arts Centre before it closed for good. Intrepid briefly had a venue called The Planet. There were also fairly recent stories about the deaths of the Bastion Theatre and the New Bastion Theatre, and the big expense of using the McPherson Playhouse for shows. The idea was to take all the lessons of these failures and make something sustainable.”

What your donation supports

The theatres might not look that different when you visit next, but they will be safer and easier for our technicians and crews to work in, for designers and companies to create in, and for audiences like you to enjoy live performance in.

Over the next year, we are making important upgrades to theatrical structures at both The Metro Studio and Intrepid Studio. This “under the hood” work includes updates to bring our venues up to modern theatre standards: the installation of new drapes and low-energy house lights at The Metro; the design, manufacturing and installation of new overhead structures at both theatres for lighting gear and aerial acts; and modern energy-efficient work lights for both theatres. This all carries a cost! These much needed upgrades cost $415,000 and thanks to successful Capital Grants, we have raised most of the funds for this project but need your help for the final push! Make a meaningful donation and be a part of this next phase for these much-loved and much-used theatres.

Metro Seat Campaign update

We know that the change of seating at The Metro Studio to cabaret seating means that donors who donated to the Metro Seat campaign will not see their chair plaques on the new seating. We have removed and stored all of the beautiful brass chair plaques, and have plans to install them on a display in The Metro lobby, so you’ll still see your name proudly displayed at the theatre; just not on a seat!

We hope you understand that this new seating configuration will allow us to safely seat patrons with social distancing measures and sanitization protocols in place.
