Songwriter and musician Sarah MacDougall and writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote both used to live on the road. They met in the green room of a theatre before a show in the summer of 2016, and a deep and lasting artistic connection was immediately sparked. Since then, they have combined their visions on many projects, including Trader Time, a full-length show complete with a musical score for a six-piece band, which launched to sold-out crowds in 2019.

Then the pandemic struck, and all the wheels stopped turning under everyone’s feet. In lockdown at her place in London, Ontario, Sarah sat down with a guitar and her computer and began to craft some new songs, inspired by missing her Swedish family and friends who were similarly grounded on the other side of an ocean, and Ivan began to answer the giant backlog of mail and correspondence that had collected while touring.

Out of This Blue is an eclectic selection of the songs and stories that emerged from both artists during this sudden period of stillness and solitude. Inspired by having time to watch the garden turn green in the spring and flower and wilt, infused with the longing and loss that social isolation has brought to all of our lives, and touching on matters of the heart that have always resonated for both of these artists, Out of This Blue is an homage to family, friendship, mortality, and the ability of writing and music to connect us all.

About the artists

Ivan Coyote is a writer and storyteller. Born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, they are the author of thirteen books, the creator of four films, six stage shows, and three albums that combine storytelling with music. Coyote’s books have won the ReLit Award, been named a Stonewall Honour Book, been longlisted for Canada Reads, and been shortlisted for the Hilary Weston Prize for non-fiction. In 2017 Ivan was given an honorary Doctor of Laws from Simon Fraser University for their writing and activism. Coyote’s stories grapple with the complex and intensely personal topics of gender identity, family, class, and queer liberation, but always with a generous heart, and a quick wit. Ivan’s stories manage to handle both the hilarious and the historical with reverence and compassion, and remind us all of our own fallible and imperfect humanity, while at the same time inspiring us to change the world. Ivan’s 13th book, Care Of, will be released in June 2021 by McClelland and Stewart.
