OUTstages favourite Ivan Coyote returns with a brand new multimedia show combining stories, songs and visuals created with recording artist and songwriter Sarah MacDougall and featuring a 3 piece band.

Writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote is a born-and-raised third-generation Yukoner whose family roots in Whitehorse reach back to February of 1949, when their beloved grandmother first arrived by train to the foot of Main Street, pregnant and clutching the hand of her one-year-old son. Trader Time is a series of interconnected stories, written by Coyote and scored by Swedish-born Yukon songwriter Sarah MacDougall. These two artists blend story, songs and visuals to create a haunting and sometimes hilarious meander through small-town big-family politics, growing up queer in a cold cold place, the life and deaths of two very different matriarchs, and some of the secrets buried in all that permafrost.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Ivan Coyote

Ivan Coyote is the author of eleven books, the creator of four short films, six full-length live shows, and three albums that combine storytelling with music. Ivan is a seasoned stage performer, and over the last two decades has become an audience favourite at storytelling, writer’s, film, poetry, and folk music festivals from Anchorage to Amsterdam to Australia.

The Globe and Mail called Coyote ‘a natural-born storyteller’ and the Ottawa Xpress once said that ‘Coyote is to Canadian literature what kd lang is to country music: a beautifully odd fixture.’

Ivan often grapples with the complex and intensely personal issues of gender identity in their work, as well as topics such as family, class, social justice and queer liberation, but always with a generous heart, a quick wit, and the nuanced and finely-honed timing of a gifted raconteur. Ivan’s stories remind of us of our own fallible and imperfect humanity while at the same time inspiring us to change the world.

Ivan’s 11th book, Tomboy Survival Guide, was released in the fall of 2016 with Arsenal Pulp Press. Tomboy Survival Guide was named an American Library Association Stonewall Honor Book in 2016, shortlisted for the Hilary Weston Roger’s Trust prize for non-fiction, and long-listed for Canada Reads 2018. Last fall Ivan was given an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Simon Fraser University for their writing and activism.

Sarah MacDougall

Described by the magazine Rootstime in Belgium as ‘one of the greatest talents of our era’, Yukon-based 2-time Western Canadian Music Award winning artist Sarah MacDougall is known for her honest and poetic songs, passionate performances, and unique voice. Born in Sweden, Swedish magazine Nöjesguiden declared her ‘one of Sweden’s best singer/songwriters’.

The recent record, Grand Canyon, was produced by Sarah and Caleb Stull and was recorded in Toronto and Vancouver, features 8 songs and guest appearances from Erika Angell (Thus:Owls), Rose Cousins, Jesse Zubot (Tanya Tagaq, Dan Mangan), Peggy Lee, and Leah Abramson (Abramson Singers).

Stepping outside of traditional folk and flirting with sounds that could have come from The Postal Service or Kate Bush, Grand Canyon keeps the acoustic guitar but infuses the sound with heavier drums and richly textured strings and synths.

The songs are about identity, love, fear, hope, growing up, rootlessness, and forgiveness. They are written from the point of view of the hopeful outsider, trying to figure out their place and make sense of the world. Grand Canyon sees Sarah challenging herself and pushing new boundaries musically and sonically, and it is an album that will surely see Sarah reach new levels in her career.

Sarah has played festivals such as Iceland Airwaves, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Edmonton Folk Festival, The Great Escape, and she has been featured on CBC’s Vinyl Café. She has had her songs placed in TV series such as The Vampire Diaries, and has toured, opened for and shared the stage with artists such as the Cat Empire, Lee Harvey Osmond, Bruce Cockburn, Tallest Man on Earth, Passenger, and many more.
