YOU AND I ≠ WE is a collaboration between Romi Kim (they/ them) and Kendell Yan (she/ they), performed by their drag personas SKIM (he/him) and Maiden China (she/they). In this experimental show Maiden China and SKIM explore the weight of representation, the complexities and intersections of gender, race, and sexuality, and what it means to be in their bodies in public and private spheres. The performance shares insights into vulnerable experiences and gestures of refusal in being consumed by the audience’s gaze. SKIM and Maiden China push boundaries through sharing their own narratives and intersecting drag with theatre, mixed with care and play and contemporary performance art. A work in progress.

About the artists
Kendell Yan (she/they), a trans-femme second-generation Chinese artist, thrives in the realm of multidisciplinary creativity. Embracing the drag persona of Maiden China, Kendell explores vulnerability, queer rituals, and liminality through their artistry, which encompasses performance, sculpture, and digital media. They hold titles such as Mx Cobalt All Star and Entertainer of the Year, while their performances have graced stages at prestigious events like the rEvolver Festival and Transform Cabaret Festival. She performs regularly as a member of the House of Rice, an all Asian drag family in Vancouver, BC. as well as one of the Darlings, a non-binary drag collective. Kendell’s leadership extends to Queer Based Media, a platform that empowers fellow queer creators.
김새로미, Romi Kim or SKIM in drag, is an interdisciplinary artist currently living on the unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and Sel̓íl̓witulh Nations. Kim is a nonbinary trans-masc second-generation Korean lesbian. They identify themselves in using these words as verbs rather than nouns or adjectives—constantly in action, and in flux. Their artistic practice is explored through an interdisciplinary approach and intersectional feminist queer theory. Kim has shown works in Seoul, South Korea -Ani-seed Festival and Space 55; the United Kingdom -Queer Asia Festival; Edmonton, Canada -The Works Art and Design Festival and Vancouver -Vines Festival, the Polygon Art gallery and SUM gallery.
