Pedro grew up as a person of Hispanic descent in a small-town in Northern BC. As the first-generation son of an immigrant, his father told him to abandon his Guatemalan heritage, his mother refused to learn English, and he grew up with hockey and beer – what could be more Canadian?

About the artist/company: rice & beans theatre focuses on the creation, incubation, and production of original performances. Through countless hours of vigorous experimentation, with intimate passion and delicate violence, we write, adapt, and devise work that is relevant and artistically responsible.
Derek Chan is a theatre maker and translator. In 2015, Derek won the Vancouver Fringe New Play Prize. He was the Artistic Director Apprentice at Playwrights Theatre Centre during their 2015/16 Season. Derek has recently received a Glassco Translation Residency in Tadoussac, Quebec hosted by Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal. He is also currently the Associate Artistic Producer of Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre.
Pedro Chamale is a first-generation Canadian theatre artist who was born and raised in Northern BC. Pedro has been a performer/collaborator on such projects as The Walking Projects (Battery Opera), Are We There Yet? (Neworld Theatre), The Show Must Go On (Push Festival). Most recently he was a member of the acting company at the Banff Playwrights Colony and is DJ Don Pedro in Carmen Aguirre’s Broken Tailbone.
