The Canadian Play Thing + Intrepid Theatre
Announcing a new partnership between Intrepid Theatre and The Canadian Play Thing. We are thrilled to be working with past Artistic Director/Producer Janet Munsil on this new partnership to connect artists, playwrights & audiences digitally, and to welcome Justin F. Lee as the Project Coordinator of The Canadian Play Thing, thanks to UVic Coop. Since launching March, more than 60 scripts from playwrights across the country have been read online and new projects, like The Apartment of Writing, have been created to support and develop new work from playwrights.
Established in March of 2020, the Canadian Play Thing has presented 60 live readings and events to date, with the participation of more than 300 actor-readers and behind-the-scenes volunteer assistance from UVic Fine Arts students Lauren Frost and Justin Lee.
Over the summer, Justin (currently based in Calgary) developed the Playwright2Playwright series, supported by the Playwrights Guild of Canada, where emerging and established playwrights have an opportunity to read from their work and interview each other – as well as the Apartment of Writing, a virtual “writers’ room” where four UVIC writing grads developed a script for the four-episode pod-play, A Way Out, which will be recorded in November.

Justin is an emerging writer and director for the stage and screen. Over the summer under the guidance of playwright Janet Munsil, he created new projects for the Play Thing: running a writer’s room for emerging talent and creating a Zoom interview series that connects emerging playwrights with their role models. Recent credits include: writing Ngaii Duk (SATCo), acting in I and You (Langham Court), and crewing short-film Dream Book (UVic Writing Department)
Currently investigating subjects of cultural hybridity, Chinese reputation and the accessibility of theatre, he is elated to be working with the Play Thing and Intrepid Theatre to bring digital theatre into Canadian homes.
