Intrepid Theatre is thrilled to announce new dates for this concert presentation of the 2018 Fringe smash-hit and winner of the inaugural JAYMAC Outstanding Production Award, Puente Theatre’s Fado, The Saddest Music in the World.
This in concert performance is not the full production of the show, just the musical excerpts and some narration. This presentation runs 75 minutes, plus a 15 minute intermission and comprises two parts: the music from the show, followed by a Fado concert featuring Sara Marreiros.
“This excellent production from Victoria’s Puente Theatre, directed by Mercedes Bátiz-Benét, retraces some familiar tropes of the immigrant experience while beautifully unearthing the particulars of these characters.”
-Jerry Wasserman, Vancouver Sun
Acclaimed Portuguese-Canadian playwright Elaine Ávila’s new play, FADO, is a tale of love and ghosts set in the back alleys and brothels of old Lisbon. Part concert, part theatre, the story of a young woman confronting her country’s Fascist past and her own identity is interwoven with the heartbreaking national music of Portugal known as Fado, which means “fate.”
The hit of the Victoria Fringe in 2018, Fado won the Award for Favourite Musical, with BC’s own beloved Sara Marreiros playing the ghost of Amália Rodrigues, the queen of Fado, and played a sold-out run at Vancouver’s Firehall Arts Centre.

About the company
Puente Theatre is dedicated to celebrating our country’s cultural diversity through theatrical experience. Since its founding in 1988, Puente has created, produced, translated, toured, and presented professional theatre from the perspective of people outside of the mainstream, bringing people together across boundaries, and exploring what it means to forge a future for our planet made out of billions of different and utterly unique identities.
The Firehall Theatre Society/Firehall Arts Centre is celebrating its 38th season of bringing theatre and dance works from diverse cultural and indigenous heritages to the stage. We support the development of new plays, musicals and choreographies in our intimate black box theatre in downtown Vancouver. We are honoured to have worked with Puente Theatre on this joint production of Elaine Avila’s Fado, The Saddest Music in the World.
